Get Involved with Miracles in Motion

No previous experience with horses or disabled individuals is necessary to volunteer at Miracles in Motion. What makes a successful Miracles volunteer? Reliability, flexibility, and a desire to learn and to help others. It's also a great opportunity to work with horses if you have horse experience.

Provide Special Skills
Miracles could use several volunteers with special skills, like mechanical skills and computer networking. View these specialized needs (and our regular needs) at www.VolunteerMatch.org. and www.corridorvolunteers.org.

Help Our Riders
Over 100 volunteers receive training for the Miracles in Motion classes each year. Click on the calendar link at left to see when riding sessions begin and end. Our volunteers must:
• Be 14 to work in class -- Junior Volunteers age 13 and under may work as barn assistants, help with games, etc.
• Be fit enough to walk in 2-3 consecutive 50-minute classes
• Have the upper body strength to perform appropriate holds
• Receive hands-on training (see calendar or call 857-4141 for dates)

Sidewalkers
The main objective for a sidewalker is to ensure the safety of the rider. At times, this means providing physical support to the rider. On other occasions, sidewalkers walk or jog alongside the equestrian as a safety measure. Therapeutic riding requires a high ratio of volunteers to students -- many riders need two sidewalkers. As a result, we are always looking for people who are willing to learn the needs of disabled equestrians.

  • Keep the rider attentive to the lesson
  • Assist with and reinforce instructions
  • Provide physical support to the rider
  • Prevent falls
  • Help keep the horse moving

Sidewalkers enjoy the interaction with students and see their progress first-hand! Please call (319) 857-4141 today if you are interested in this type of involvement.

Horse Committee
The people on the horse committee catch and prepare the horses for class and lead the animal in the class arena. Previous horse experience is necessary. These individuals go through special training to learn about our horses, tack and facility.

  • Lead the horse in class
  • Catch, groom and tack horses
  • Put horses and tack away
  • Clean stalls and barn aisles
  • Possible year-round horse-related needs

Flexible, Year-Round Opportunities
Miracles in Motion provides year-round volunteer opportunities for people with all types of skills and any level of time commitment! Your talents can be channeled into a rewarding experience if you like to:

  • Build things
  • Meet people
  • Talk on the phone
  • Work on the computer
  • Plan activities
  • Work outdoors
